As an act of resistance, local councillors voted to reinstate Dagenham in the borough name, and on 1 January 1980 it became the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

The idea of centres with public spaces where shoppers could meet and relax was still a cutting edge concept in the mid 1970s!
